Exterior flatwork is a different problem
A driveway, patio or pool deck faces direct sun, standing water, freeze-thaw cycling and a far wider temperature swing than any garage interior. The chemistry and the finish both have to change accordingly.
UV stability is not optional outdoors
Any exterior coating needs a UV-stable topcoat. Polyaspartic and polyurea systems are the standard answer; unprotected epoxy is not suitable for exterior use and will amber and chalk.
Freeze-thaw and flexibility
Charlotte does not have a severe winter, but it has enough freeze-thaw cycling to matter. Water gets into the concrete, freezes, expands and works at any weak bond. A more flexible coating that moves with the slab handles this better than a rigid film, and slab drainage should be assessed before anything is applied.
Texture and grip
Exterior surfaces get wet, so slip resistance is a safety requirement rather than a preference. Anti-skid aggregate is broadcast into or mixed through the topcoat. Pool decks additionally want a surface that stays comfortable underfoot in direct sun, which pushes toward lighter colours and a textured finish.
Where a coating is the wrong answer
Worth saying plainly: coating cannot rescue badly deteriorated exterior concrete. Heavy spalling, structural cracking, significant settlement or active drainage problems all need addressing first, and in some cases replacement is the honest recommendation over a coating that will fail. Any competent installer should tell you that during the assessment rather than after.

About this system
Will the colour fade in sunlight?
Standard epoxy is not UV stable and can amber or yellow where sunlight reaches it — typically the strip just inside an open garage door. Polyaspartic and polyurea topcoats are UV stable and hold their colour, which is why most modern systems use epoxy or polyurea as a base coat and a polyaspartic topcoat over it.
Do I need to fix cracks before coating?
Yes. Cracks, pits and spalled areas are repaired as part of surface preparation, usually with a polymer or epoxy patching compound that is ground flush once cured. Coating over an unrepaired crack telegraphs the crack through the finish and creates a weak point. Expect crack and spall repair to add to the project cost — published figures commonly cite an additional $1 to $5 per square foot depending on severity.
How long should a professionally installed coating last?
Published industry ranges put standard epoxy at roughly 5 to 10 years in a residential garage, and polyurea and polyaspartic systems at 15 years or more. Real-world life depends heavily on slab preparation, moisture conditions under the slab, coating thickness and how the space is used. Any specific durability guarantee should come in writing from the installing contractor.
