Polyaspartic, in plain terms
Polyaspartic is a fast-curing, UV-stable coating chemistry — technically a sub-class of polyurea. In residential floor work it is used mostly as the clear topcoat over a pigmented base, and sometimes as the whole system. Two properties drive its popularity: it cures in hours rather than days, and it does not yellow in sunlight.
Why the fast cure matters
Because polyaspartic reaches handling strength quickly, grinding, base coat, flake broadcast and topcoat can often be completed in a single working day, with the garage usable that evening and vehicles back on it within about a day. A conventional epoxy build normally means an overnight cure between coats and a longer wait before vehicle traffic.
That speed cuts both ways. A short working time means the crew has to keep moving, and application in high heat shortens the window further — a genuine consideration during a Charlotte July. It is not a forgiving product for an inexperienced installer.
UV stability
Standard epoxy ambers when exposed to ultraviolet light. In a garage that shows up as a discoloured band just inside the door where daylight lands. Polyaspartic is UV stable and holds its colour, which is why it is the default topcoat for any bay that spends time open, and effectively mandatory for exterior flatwork.
Temperature tolerance
Polyaspartic remains workable across a wider temperature range than epoxy and stays more flexible once cured, which helps it tolerate the expansion and contraction cycles of an unconditioned garage or an exterior slab.

The common premium specification is an epoxy or polyurea base coat for adhesion and film build, with a polyaspartic clear topcoat for UV stability and abrasion resistance. When a quote says 'polyaspartic system', ask which layers are actually polyaspartic.

When can I drive on a newly coated floor?
Published guidance for polyaspartic and polyurea systems is typically light foot traffic after several hours and vehicle traffic after roughly 24 hours. Standard epoxy usually needs longer — often 24 to 72 hours before vehicles. Cure times shift with temperature and humidity, which matters in Charlotte summers. Always follow the timeline the installing contractor gives you for the specific product used.
Will the colour fade in sunlight?
Standard epoxy is not UV stable and can amber or yellow where sunlight reaches it — typically the strip just inside an open garage door. Polyaspartic and polyurea topcoats are UV stable and hold their colour, which is why most modern systems use epoxy or polyurea as a base coat and a polyaspartic topcoat over it.
How long should a professionally installed coating last?
Published industry ranges put standard epoxy at roughly 5 to 10 years in a residential garage, and polyurea and polyaspartic systems at 15 years or more. Real-world life depends heavily on slab preparation, moisture conditions under the slab, coating thickness and how the space is used. Any specific durability guarantee should come in writing from the installing contractor.
